The First Saturday Devotion: A Simple, Beautiful Way to Console Mary
Some devotions in the Church may feel complicated or heavy. The First Saturday Devotion isn’t one of them. It’s gentle, simple, and surprisingly personal — almost like Mary inviting you to sit with her for a little while each month.
If you’ve ever wondered what this devotion is really about, why it matters, or why it lasts only five months, here’s a clear and heartfelt look at it.
What the First Saturday Devotion Actually Is
The devotion comes from Fatima. In 1925, Mary appeared to Sister Lucia and asked for a small monthly offering of love and reparation to her Immaculate Heart.
Just four simple things done on the first Saturday of five consecutive months:
-
Confession
-
Holy Communion
-
5 decades of the Rosary
-
15 minutes of quiet meditation on the Rosary mysteries
All of this is offered in reparation — meaning, as an act of love to make up for the ways her heart is wounded by sin and indifference.
It’s about love responding to love.
Why This Devotion Matters Today
Mary’s request wasn’t random. She spoke about the coldness, ingratitude, and rejection that wound her heart — not because she is wants any pity from us, but because these things distance people from God. She loves us, her children, and therefor it matters.
The devotion matters because:
-
It softens our hearts in a world that’s growing harder
-
It brings peace into families and homes
-
It repairs the damage caused by sin and indifference
-
It draws us closer to Jesus through Mary
In its simplicity, it gives you a moment each month to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with what matters.
What You Actually Do on a First Saturday
Here’s the devotion in the simplest possible form:
1. Go to Confession
Any time within about eight days before or after. Just keep the intention of offering it in reparation.
2. Receive Holy Communion
On the First Saturday itself.
3. Pray the Rosary
Five decades, with the intention of consoling Mary’s heart.
4. Spend 15 minutes with Mary
Choose one or more Rosary mysteries and meditate on them.
Isn't this so simple? A small, monthly offering of our love to our Lady.
Why Five Months? The Meaning Behind the Number
This is one of the most beautiful parts of the devotion.
When Sister Lucia asked Jesus why five Saturdays, He explained that they correspond to five specific wounds to Mary’s heart:
-
Denial of her Immaculate Conception
-
Denial of her perpetual virginity
-
Rejection of her as Mother of God and our mother
-
Attempts to turn children away from her
-
Insults and profanations against her images
Each First Saturday is like placing a small balm on one of these wounds.
Your prayers and devotion will go a long way to help other souls!
